Retrobrighted the front blank plates but otherwise everything was cleaned with a magic eraser, isopropyl alcohol, and some old rags + shirts. It’s gonna eventually be a 98SE + 2000 dual boot rig for late 90s/early 2000s games. Plan is to bump it up to 1.1GHz 512MB RAM 40GB 7200RPM HD ATI RADEON 9600SE and it’ll be all set.

I honestly have to ask, why?

Can’t you just use a VM on a recent computer and install the older OSs ?

Again you have no idea how much of these I repaired then eventually scraped them. I sold/fixed computers from the late 90s to 2010 when I started work where I am now. I am my companies entire IT department.

moreso for running older programs and A3D stuff

oh and why not? I flip them and actually profit off of it and have been doing it for years now.

also any chance you get anything like this or older still?

Man, at the place I used to work I put quite a few of those in the dumpster. At the place I’m at now the oldest ones I have laying around are HP Elite 8200s and Dell Latitude E5420s. I actually use an 8200 because the IT guy is the last to get upgraded.

I’ve scavenged up 16GB of RAM and it has an i7 (second gen) but the best I’ve come up with for a hard drive is a 7200 rpm HDD. Where it fails is doing things like running virtual machines and it doesn’t have that fancy USB 3. I’m actually authorized to buy myself a new one tomorrow so we’ll see what I come up with.

Right now a Dell Precision 3000 with 32GB of RAM, an i7 7700 and an M.2 SSD boot drive is the leading candidate, but I have to make sure there aren’t any better deals out there.

A friend of mine had a P4 version as his primary computer from 2001-2011 or so. We now have 3, I think, an AMD, a PIII and a P4.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

I’m often on the lookout for any of the color kits - that smoke color was the most popular, and the default color scheme. These computers also had a keyboard and speakers with color accents on them, and they could be changed out like the front panel on the tower.

yeah they had those speakers that attached to the CRT monitors it came with...

I do have some generic PS2 compaq keyboard but i like my 2nd model M more :P

I forgot about the CRT ( I think we have one of those, too... ); my friend had an LCD as an upgrade when his family bought the PC back in 2001, a MAG Innovision, possibly 15", I believe that’s still around, too.

The only remarkable thing about the keyboard was the switchable plastic piece.

Kinja'd!!!

Well, except for the version that had a built-in credit card reader. I managed to find one of those at one point, and got it for my friend for Christmas a few years ago.

I had a Slot A Athlon when ME came out, and it would only run at core speed (33MHz). The board ran 98SE, 2000, and Linux just fine, but not ME.

As an IT guy you no doubt are aware of the fact these second processors are immune to SPECTRE and the like. Might be worth keeping the old girl around in the corner just in case.

I use an 8200 which is getting replaced very soon too. Thinking of keeping it in the family with the Elitedesk 800 G3 TWR.

Oh absolutely, I always keep some older machines stashed away that I can get up and running quickly if the need arises. They also come in handy when they pull the old, “Oh hey this new person is starting today and they need access to everything and a computer” bullshit.
